Law Library Redevelopment
At NexArch Studio, we view institutional redevelopment not merely as a construction exercise, but as a dialogue between history and the future. Our recent design for the Faculty of Law Library at Lucknow University exemplifies this philosophy. As architects practicing in a city as culturally stratified as Lucknow, the challenge was to create a structure that respects the university's formidable legacy while establishing a distinct, forward-looking identity for its legal scholars.
The core concept of the library rests on the duality of permanence and lightness. The building is enveloped in a textured, earthy cladding, reminiscent of the traditional sandstone that characterizes much of the region's historic architecture. This granular texture provides a visual weight, symbolizing the solidity of the legal institution.
To offset this heaviness, we introduced a series of stylized white arches. Drawing inspiration from the rich Awadhi architectural vocabulary of Lucknow—where the arch is a dominant motif—we reinterpreted this classical element into a sleek, modernist colonnade. These white vertical elements do not just serve as ornamentation; they act as a visual rhythm that breaks the monotony of the facade, creating a deep interplay of shadow and light that changes throughout the day.
A defining feature of the design is the introduction of large-scale geometric interventions. The massive circular oculus window on the western façade acts as a dramatic focal point. It disrupts the rigid orthogonality of the grid, introducing a moment of softness and providing a "lens" through which the interior reading spaces connect with the lush campus greenery outside.
The entrance experience is choreographed to mark a transition from the bustle of the university to the quiet sanctity of the library. This lattice framework creates a transitional threshold, filtering sunlight and offering a sense of arrival before one steps through the main glass facade. The transparency of the entrance lobby ensures that the building feels accessible and democratic, inviting students in rather than walling them off.
Ultimately, this redevelopment project is an exercise in placemaking within an academic context. By blending the vernacular familiarity of the arch with contemporary massing and material precision, we have aimed to deliver a library that is not just a repository of books, but a vibrant, inspiring space for the next generation of legal minds.
